The basics

English to English Dictionaries

Online EN-EN dictionaries are an essential asset for your learning. Google translate is not the worst, but it's still far from being ideal. Translation is grand if used moderately and at the 'right time'. I'll explain more about it on a post.

Now, back to dictionaries. Online dictionaries not only have the definition, but they will also have the phonemic transcript of the word so you know how to pronounce it, but I know most people are not used to the symbols of the phonemic chart. No worries. Online dictionaries will have an icon you can click on to listen to the pronunciation of that word. Cool, isn't it?

The ones I use the most are: Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, Cambridge Dictionary, Longman and Macmillan. The links to their free online versions are the following:

1. OALD

2. Cambridge Online Dictionary

3. Longman Online Dictionary

4. Macmillan Online Dictionary
